• Parents being sent to debt collectors for overdue school fees
• Students being threatened with missing out on activities
• Minister must explain what’s going on

Shadow Education Minister Michelle O’Byrne said it’s completely unacceptable that Tasmanian parents are being sent to debt collectors for overdue public school fees.

“This is not how we should treat parents in Tasmania,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“What’s equally alarming is the revelation that parents are being threatened that their kids will miss out of activities if the fees aren’t paid on time.

“Students in public education should not be punished over their parents’ financial situation.

“It’s unacceptable and frankly upsetting that some students could miss out on activities while their classmates get to enjoy them.

“The Minister admitted the issue had been raised with him but why hasn’t he acted?

“Minister Rockliff must immediately order his department to call off the debt collectors and start treating parents and students fairly.

“Labor would review school fees in government to make sure families are being treated fairly.”
