• Medihotels operating effectively in other states and territories
• Rooms would be for patients almost ready to go home from hospital
• Policy designed to improve patient flow
Michael Ferguson’s baseless scare campaign on Medihotels exposes his wilful ignorance of a well-established model of care interstate and around the world.
Labor Leader Rebecca White said Medihotels are operating effectively, safely and efficiently across Australia, including in Victoria and the Northern Territory.
“Michael Ferguson’s claim Medihotels are somehow experimental is dishonest,” Ms White said.
“Medihotels are not used in place of emergency care or to look after very sick patients. They offer a way to care for patients who are not quite ready to go home yet because they might be recuperating post-surgery, waiting for medication to be dispensed or waiting for tests, assessments or equipment to be provided.
“Patients will be supported with 24/7 nursing care while they are in the Medihotel.
“They offer an effective way to take pressure off hospitals by freeing up beds to be used for patients with more serious medical needs.
“Bed shortages in each region of the state is causing serious bed block in our hospitals with the issue impacting the ability of staff to do their job and negatively impacting patient care.
“One of the primary roles of Medihotels is to provide accommodation for patients who need to be close to hospital for tests, scans and appointments. The Minister’s claim they will somehow threaten regional hospitals is ridiculous.
“Mr Ferguson should take the time read Labor’s policy which includes providing better transport linkages to regional areas to better utilise capacity in regional facilities.
“While he is at it, Mr Ferguson he should read up on the use of Medihotels interstate.
“He might learn something about how to solve the health crisis he has created.”
