The Tasmania University Union (TUU) have received concerns from a number of students about their safety and wellbeing on campus at the University of Tasmania (UTAS).
“Every person in Australia has the right to apply for and, where they meet the criteria, attend tertiary education,” said Postgraduate President Joey Crawford.
The TUU Council firmly believes students should not be in position where they feel unsafe on campus as a result of other students.
“Whilst students are still feeling unsafe on campus, as the petition testifies to, the University has to do more,” Mr Crawford continued.
Despite this, the TUU Council affirms that students should not be treated with prejudice, and their academic performance and conduct on campus should determine their enrolment status at a tertiary institution.
“The University of Tasmania has an obligation to take steps to ensure all students’ wellbeing on campus, and we believe they should strive to do that without depriving individual access to education.”
The Tasmania University Union (TUU) was founded in 1899 as the representative body for all students of the University of Tasmania. The TUU seeks to advance the rights and protect the interests of students by ensuring the their voices are heard by parliamentarians, policy makers, university leadership and the wider community.
