Tasmania’s rental affordability crisis continues to worsen as the federal government twiddles its thumbs on housing affordability, Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim says.
“Hobart is the second most unaffordable capital city in Australia in which to rent, and things are getting worse,” Senator McKim said.
“In the recent budget there was no real funding increase for social housing and homelessness services, and no increase in rent assistance for low-income renters.”
“The government is sitting on its hands while homelessness rises, public housing stock is depleted and the squeeze on rental affordability gets tighter.”
“Young renters will continue getting absolutely shafted until we dramatically increase the supply of social housing and affordable rental housing, and stop rigging the housing system in favour of wealthy investors.”
