Good morning, and welcome to The Briefing.

Editorial staff at several Fairfax media outlets have gone on strike for a week to protest a further round of job cuts.

Journalists at The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald and the Brisbane Times voted for the action after Fairfax management announced it would cut another 125 editorial jobs from its newsrooms, or roughly one quarter of Fairfax’s daily metro news staff. Fairfax journalists in the Canberra Press Gallery are also on strike, likely gutting Fairfax’s planned coverage of the 2017-18 budget. The Briefing will not share or link to Fairfax stories for the duration of the strike.
