AMA Tasmania President Dr Stuart Day says today’s announcement of $730 million in funding for the
Mersey Community Hospital was a vital step forward for the health outcomes, not only for the
people of the north west coast, but Tasmania as whole.
“This funding allows the Mersey to be integrated into the statewide health system and have its role
clearly defined within a Tasmanian health context, as well as providing job security for staff, ” said Dr
Day.
“The delivery of a model of care across the north and north west coast which delivers high quality
and safe outcomes for patients will aid in attracting and retaining specialists, and ultimately reduce
the reliance on locum doctors
“We encourage the Government to come up with a pay deal that would allow Tasmania to attract
specialist doctors to regional and rural areas of the state.
“Money saved on paying locum doctors will be able to be returned back into the Tasmanian
health system, improving health outcomes for everyone.”
