Join Amnesty International for a night of great music for a great cause, and help
defend human rights around the world. With local artists including Jed Appleton, The
Reporters, and Persian band Paywand, it’s time to fight for our rights and party!
‘The Party for Human Rights is a positive, proactive initiative. With so much that is
distressing in the news about human rights abuses globally and at home, it is
empowering to know that we can come together in solidarity – it is our right to party,
so party we will, to raise awareness and funds for people who don’t have that right.’
Adele Spencer – Amnesty International Tasmania Branch President.
A silent auction will also run over the course of the night, offering skills and services
of local businesses and supporters to be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
The idea for the Party for Human Rights came from long time Amnesty International
supporter and The Reporters frontman, Ben Ross, who has been a member of
Amnesty for many years.
Quotes from Ben Ross – Frontman of The Reporters and event organiser:
‘I enjoy the rights I have in Australia – freedom of movement, expression, belief etc.
The Party for Human rights is about acknowledging what we have – and celebrating it
– while remembering that millions of people around the world don’t have these basic
human rights. When we party at this event, we raise money for Amnesty
International, because it and other human rights organisations fight for human rights
for all.’
‘… as a large international organisation, (Amnesty International) is able to help
defend the human rights of vulnerable and oppressed people across the globe. The
research and campaign work Amnesty does has a real impact on the fight for refugee
and indigenous rights and other important causes.’
Events such as the Party for Human Rights happen all across Australia and allow
Tasmania’s Amnesty International action groups to have an impact at a local level.
The funds raised will go towards supporting Amnesty’s vital grassroots initiatives
including organising and campaign related events in Tasmania.
Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people campaigning to protect
human rights. We have a vision of a world in which every person enjoys all of the
rights stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international
human rights standards.
