The Raspins Beach Sail ‘n’ Surf Centre at Orford will be officially opened by Mayor Michael Kent today at 1pm.

Generous funding was received from Community Sport & Recreation, Glamorgan Spring Bay Council, Spring Bay Boat Club and the Orford Odeon.

Triabunna District School students participate in weekly outdoor activities including sailing and surfing. The storage and trailering of the school yachts was becoming an issue and this prompted the idea to build a permanent storage facility at Raspins Beach. This is an ideal beach to learn to sail and hold other water sport activities. Through the extraordinary efforts of the Triabunna District School and staff, six (6) pacer yachts, surfboards, kayaks and wet suits have been purchased.

The opening of the new facility will be preceded by students from Triabunna District School participating in these water-based activities, with the help of community members.

The idea for the new facility was instigated by Sean McCarthy from Triabunna District School, John Hall from the Spring Bay Boat Club and Jane Wing from the Orford Community Group.

The group has commenced talks with Surf Lifesaving Tasmania in the hope of beginning a nipper’s lifesaving group based at Raspins Beach.

Mayor Michael Kent says:

“The new building is an invaluable addition to our community facilities and in particular a much needed resource and asset for the purposes of education in water, oceans and the environment. The facility will importantly contribute to the sailing and water safety education for all students and children in our area.”

The project group would like to personally thank Adrian O’Leary the Manager Buildings at Glamorgan Spring Bay Council and his team of builders for all of their efforts and hard work in constructing the building. The community look forward to making great use of the new facility.
