In 2016 Malcolm Turnbull promised $100 million for Landcare but more than three months later the money is nowhere to be seen.

Lyons Labor MP Brian Mitchell says the prime minister promised the funding as part of a deal to force through his 15% backpackers tax.

“I am angry but not surprised that the Landcare money is nowhere to be seen,” Mr Mitchell says. “Mr Turnbull broke his promise to deliver NBN to Tasmania by 2016 and now he’s breaking his promise to provide Landcare funding. This is who he is.”

The $100 million was promised two years after the Abbott-Turnbull Government ripped $480 million out of Landcare.

The promise was a centrepiece of the Government’s dirty deal with the Greens to force a 15% backpackers tax through the parliament.

“Landcare is a great community organisation doing practical work to protect the environment. It deserves better than to be treated so shabbily by this prime minister.

“Mr Turnbull must come clean on the Landcare funding and tell Tasmanians if and when it will be delivered.”
