The Tasmanian Special Timbers Alliance welcomes proposed legislative changes to the Forestry (Re-building the Forest Industry) Act 2014 recently announced by resources Minister Guy Barnett.
Andrew Denman of the Tasmanian Special Timbers Alliance (TSTA) said;
“Access to the Future Potential Production Forest for specialty timber harvesting from October 2017 will ensure that the industry has access to sustainable volumes of specialty timbers on a tread widely and lightly basis”.
“This access, coupled with the new Special Species Management Plan due for release in October this year, will ensure that the areas we harvest from are properly managed for conservation whilst ensuring that the rich cultural heritage surrounding this industry is safeguarded for future generations.“
“TSTA welcomes the Government’s approach and believes that the implementation of the Special Timbers Management Plan in late 2017 will provide this iconic sector with sustainable resource security and reduce sovereign risk associated with an unstable investment environment.”
“TSTA also acknowledges the continued bi-partisan support for the sector from Tasmanian Labor to harvest specialty timbers across a wide range of land tenures including the Future Potential Production Forests.”
