The garden of Stanwell Hall, the former Hobart home of the father of Australian landscape painting John Glover, is open to the public this weekend to celebrate his 250th birthday.

Born on February 18, 1767 in Leicestershire, England, Glover moved to Tasmania, or Van Diemen’s Land as it was then known, to take up land in 1829, when he was 64.

Glover’s first home in Van Diemen’s Land was Stanwell Hall in West Hobart, where he painted his famous landscape “Hobart Town, taken from the garden where I lived”.

The painting, which is now held in the State Library of New South Wales, depicts Glover’s magnificent garden and Hobart as it was in 1832 …
