Environmentalist Bob Brown has responded to comments by Tasmania’s Premier and Forestry Tasmania regarding logging operations in Tasmania’s Tarkine.

“The Premier should be upholding all the laws of this state, including forest practice laws,” Bob Brown said.

“The Forest Practices Authority, as the policing authority on logging, shouldn’t be secretly licensing its mates to breach its own published prohibitions. Who from the FPA inspected the nest in November and why did he/she not make their findings public?” Bob Brown said.

“It doesn’t pass the pub test,” Bob Brown said.

Two new roads for logging have been built in a threatened forest near Trowutta forest reserve, just north of the Arthur River. Save the Tarkine and Bob Brown Foundation today revealed that the logging roads have been built in recent weeks, during the restriction period for Wedge Tailed Eagle breeding season, which applies from July to February. The forestry operations are within the 1km Wedge Tailed Eagle breeding exclusion zone mandated in the Forest Practices Authority’s approved Forest Practices Plan for the site.

“The only public information available states the Wedge Tailed Eagle breeding season restrictions apply to the operation and during the season no operations are to occur,” Jenny Weber, Campaign Manager with Bob Brown Foundation said.

Tasmania’s Wedge Tailed Eagle is listed as endangered under Federal and State legislation.
