Senator Helen Polley addressed the Senate last night outlining why all Tasmanians should stand by the Tasmanian Salmon Industry.

Tasmania’s primary industries, including the aquaculture industry, is the engine room of Tasmania’s economy. From humble beginnings just 20 years ago, the Tasmanian salmon industry now generates 5,200 Tasmanian jobs and 5,000 indirect jobs.

“These are jobs in high need areas and most of them are full-time jobs in regional areas. This is an industry that has boundless opportunity and potential to support many more local families,” Senator Polley said.

Recently, these companies have been under attack from the Greens working in conjunction with “Let’s Grow Tasmania’s Future” and Graeme Wood. Independent Member for Denison, Mr Andrew Wilkie has also been speaking out against the industry.

“Mr Wilkie, the Greens and Mr Wood seem determined to demonise the industry and undermine the many jobs and families that this industry employs,” Senator Polley said.

Senator Polley echoed The Tasmanian Opposition Leader Bryan Green’s call for all levels of Government and the community to back the industry.

“Tasmania is known nationally and globally for its clean, green product and we are proud as a state to produce such high quality Atlantic salmon and ocean trout for people at home and abroad,” Senator Polley said.

Bernice Bott lives at Surges Bay and has worked in the aquaculture industry for 20 years. She has worked with Tassal for a combined 13 years—six years at Dover and nearly seven years at Huonville. The industry is very important not only to Ms Bott but also to five other members of her family who rely on this industry.

But history has shown that success cannot be taken for granted. If consumers lose faith in the product, and that is what the Greens are hoping, then that would be detrimental not only to this industry but to the entire community.

“I encourage the entire community to get behind this industry and support the many Tasmanians who rely on this business to earn a living for themselves and their families,” Senator Polley said.

The Tasmanian Federal Labor Party Caucus will meet with salmon industry representatives and the Australian Workers Union delegation in Canberra tomorrow to discuss the industry.
