Labor welcomes positive signs in latest CommSec report
Government still ignoring full-time employment crisis
More than four and a half thousand full-time jobs gone since April last year
Tasmania’s performance in the latest CommSec State of the States report contains some encouraging signs but should not distract from the full-time employment crisis facing the state.
Shadow Treasurer Scott Bacon said while it’s pleasing to see Tasmania climb to fourth on the CommSec rankings, significant economic challenges remain.
“Labor will always welcome positive economic news and there are encouraging signs contained in the latest CommSec report,” Mr Bacon said.
“An increased demand for housing is encouraging as well as growth in the retail sector.
“But the report comes just days after the latest employment figures reveal we’ve lost 600 full-time jobs in the last month.
“It continues an alarming trend with more than four and a half thousand full-time jobs disappearing since April last year.
“The huge shift from full-time to part-time work across the state is something the Liberal Government has failed to even address.
“The Government is right to identify positive signs for Tasmania’s economy, but it must also be prepared to front up to challenges.”
