The Hodgman Government is rolling out a $100 million stimulus package across the North and North West of the State to boost the Northern Tasmanian economy and support local jobs.
Today, the Premier, Will Hodgman, visited the Northern Midlands to unveil the latest projects to be funded under the stimulus package.
“The evidence is that the Northern Economic Stimulus is working, with the latest TCCI survey showing improved levels of business confidence in the North,” the Premier said.
“As part of the stimulus package, the Government will partner with local councils to fund infrastructure upgrades and today I have announced nine projects that will be funded in the Northern Midlands municipality.
“These nine projects will bring forward $6.4 million worth of investment and provide much needed upgrades to important community infrastructure.
“Local contractors will be used in the redevelopment and once the work is done, the local community will have much better infrastructure. It’s a win-win – more jobs and better facilities.”
The Treasurer, Peter Gutwein, said that the stimulus package was designed to see more investment in Northern Tasmania.
“This stimulus package is designed to benefit Northern Tasmania. So far, eight councils have applied for funding and all up applications total over $40 million. The council loan scheme is open until the end of March and I would encourage other councils in the North and North West to get their applications in as soon as possible,” the Treasurer said.
“More projects will be announced shortly and the Government wants to see shovels in the ground as quickly as possible.
“Not only will the stimulus package upgrade regional infrastructure in partnership with local councils, it will also see schools in St Mary’s, Devonport and Launceston upgraded, investment in bridges and roads across the North and North West and more affordable housing delivered sooner. It will also accelerate work on the new visitor centre at Cradle Mountain.
“There are positive economic signs across the North and North West and the stimulus package will build on that momentum,” the Treasurer said.
The nine projects announced today are:
• Campbell Town Recreation Ground and Stormwater Land Acquisition ($1m)
• Cressy Recreation Ground Amenities Upgrade ($220,000)
• Longford Recreation Ground Change Room Upgrades ($550,000)
• Ross Town Square Development ($300,000)
• Council Office Carpark and Disabled Access Extension ($200,000)
• New Concrete Footpath Program ($250,000)
• Longford Community Sports Centre Master Plan Development ($1m)
• Lighting of Sports Facilities ($1m)
• Toosey Aged Care Facility Extension ($1.9m)
