… AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPROVING LAUNCESTON ROADS
The State Liberal Government must take responsibility for improving the roads in and around the Launceston area, after major concerns have been raised by the community.
“The numerous potholes and a lack of clear and visible white lines on roadways across Launceston has led to numerous people contacting my office about the poor upkeep of our roads,” Senator Polley said.
It is an extremely busy time of year and due to the State Liberal Government’s neglect, many Tasmanian families will be travelling on unsafe roads this summer.
“It is fundamental that members of our community are able to travel safely on our roads, but currently they cannot do so due to the poor quality of our roadways,” Senator Polley said.
Tax payers deserve better quality roads. This is the responsibility of the State Government, the Minister for Roads Rene Hiding and the Department of State Growth to work with the Launceston City Council to ensure the public have confidence in our roads.
Senator Polley has personally written to the Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hiding about numerous road hazards in the hope that they would be fixed to avoid a potential road accident.
In particular, Senator Polley wrote to the Minister in relation to the junction between Brougham Street and Hillside Crescent in West Launceston as the centre lines are no longer visible. Since this time nothing has been done, and Senator Polley has been forced to contact the Minister again to bring his attention to the dangerous situation.
It is just common sense that these lines are repainted so drivers can visibly see the road markings necessary to avoid a driver crossing the road and causing an avoidable accident. It is also common sense to repair the numerous pot holes and broken roads across the north.
“The fact that the Government is not taking these traffic hazards seriously in the north of the state is of a major concern to me and Launceston road users,” Senator Polley said.
The upkeep of our roads is a life and death issue. This Hodgman Government must start to focus on the north of the State with the same attention to detail they provide the south of the State and take responsibility for our roads in ensuring they are repaired immediately.
