Last year on 8 December a group of people gathered outside the gates to Willow Court in New Norfolk to remember the forgotten children of the former Royal Derwent Hospital, and lay wreaths of white flowers. Outside of NSW, this was the only event linked to the White Flower Memorial, which remembers those with disabilities who suffered so terribly in institutions.
This year the event will be hosted by Flourish, Tasmania’s peak mental health consumer organisation, and will again be held on 8 December outside the gates to Willow Court.
Guest speakers will be the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, Ms. Robin Banks, and Commissioner for Children, Mr. Mark Morrissey.
The date is important as it comes during Human Rights Week (Tas) and marks the 16th anniversary of the closure of the Royal Derwent. Therefore, it is an appropriate time to reflect on the human rights abuses, discrimination, and suffering endured by so many for so long.
Where: Outside the gates to Willow Court, The Avenue, New Norfolk
