The CEPU has recovered over $225,000 in worker entitlements for 46 workers currently contracted to TasNetworks.

State Organiser Aaron Hagen said today that Hydro Services Tasmania (HST), a company which contracts to TasNetworks, was finally held to account after the workers joined the CEPU and collectively took their employer to the industrial umpire.

“For the past few years HST have simply refused to pay superannuation, income protection and redundancy entitlements to their staff” Mr Hagen said “By joining their Union and collectively demanding their employer do the right thing, these workers have recovered over $200,000 in unpaid entitlements”.

The CEPU also condemned the fact that one of Tasmania’s largest employers has allowed this kind of unethical behaviour to occur within its contractors.

“The CEPU raised these issues in the highest levels of TasNetworks and it was initially ignored. We had to go to the CEO and even then they only reluctantly took some action in regards to the outstanding super.”

The CEPU is now conducting its own compliance program to start addressing the high levels of illegal behaviour by contract employers for TasNetworks.

“The only way these workers can hold their employers to account is by joining their Union.”
