Tasmania’s most adventurous beach cleaners are asking the local community to support them in their mission to protect our wilderness World Heritage beaches from a polluting wave of rubbish.
“Plastic pollution is trashing Tasmania’s most spectacular beaches. We’re asking our local community to stand with us and help protect our World Heritage coastline,” said clean up coordinator Matt Dell.
Team Clean have just launched a crowd funder to help cover the costs of next year’s 100% volunteer-run not for profit expedition.
In February, a dedicated team of hardy volunteers will embark on the annual cleanup expedition to the remote south west coast of Tasmania to remove the tens of thousands of pieces of rubbish that wash up on the remote beaches of the World Heritage Area.
“We’ll be working hard to protect these beautiful beaches, but cleaning up remote ecosystems does not come cheap. We’re hoping the Tasmanian community will chip in and do their bit to get behind this important expedition” said Mr Dell.
In March this year, the cleanup crew removed a record-breaking 82,815 pieces of rubbish that had washed ashore in Tasmania’s spectacular World Heritage Area. Since 1999, this dedicated team have collected, counted and sorted well over half a million items of marine debris.
The crowdfunder is generously supported by outdoor company Patagonia as part of The Double Down, a matched donation campaign, where crowd funded donations to six grassroots environmental groups are matched dollar-for-dollar by Patagonia, up to a combined total of $100,000.
