The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, has introduced his Private Member’s Bill that would force Australia Post to respect residents’ wishes when delivering political material.

“There are a significant number of Australians who don’t want to receive unaddressed mail from political parties and politicians in their letterboxes,” Mr Wilkie said. “Trouble is there’s a loophole in the law which means that Australia Post is forced to deliver it to every single letterbox, regardless of what the resident wants.”

“My Bill would prevent Australia Post from delivering political mail if there is a sign saying ‘no unaddressed mail’, ‘addressed mail only’ or ‘no political material’.

“From my experience most people are happy to get political mail, but some people just don’t want it. Some people are concerned about environmental waste, some are concerned with their privacy and some just want to ensure there’s room in their letterbox for other important mail.

“This would be an easy reform to implement and one which I’m sure would have popular support. Now it’s time for the major parties to put political self-interest aside and listen to the community.”
