• Government knocks back motion to put downward pressure on petrol prices
• Labor’s strategy would lead to greater transparency and fairer outcomes for motorists
• Tasmanians paying too much to fill up compared to interstate drivers
The Liberal Government has arrogantly knocked back a positive motion to establish greater transparency around petrol prices in Tasmania.
Labor Leader Bryan Green said despite having the backing of the RACT, the Liberals rejected Labor’s strategy to put downward pressure on prices.
“Labor wants to give Tasmanians the best possible chance to get a fair price at the bowser but the Government isn’t interested,” Mr Green said.
“We know that for many Tasmanians, petrol is a massive burden on the family budget.
“We want Tasmanian motorists to pay a fairer price compared to drivers interstate, instead of being slugged up to 20 cents more per litre every time they fill up.
“Labor’s policy to reduce the cost of petrol in Tasmania is to establish a Fuel Price Oversight Officer, collecting and displaying fuel price data on a public website.
“We would also introduce new legislation requiring retailers to display daily fuel prices in real time and requiring service stations to display only undiscounted fuel prices on fuel boards.
“When you’re driving up to a petrol station you deserve to have a clear idea of what you’re about to pay.
“For the Liberals to not support the motion put forward is extremely disappointing.
“Other states have the type of policies in place that we’d like to see introduced here but the Liberals are too arrogant to consider them.
“We’ve got a Government that is out of touch with everyday Tasmanians.”
