• When will the secrecy end from Liberals?
• Seven releases in two years is not good enough
• Timing of RTI release raises suspicions

The actions of Attorney-General Vanessa Goodwin’s Friday afternoon bad news dump speak much more than words, Shadow Attorney-General Lara Giddings said.

“Ms Goodwin could have released this information when recently questioned in Parliament rather than using a Friday afternoon news dump,” Ms Giddings said.

“Tasmanians are right to ask when the secrecy and cover-ups will end?

“Seven early releases in two years shows that staff and our prison system are stressed under this Government.

“Trying to compare one mistake per year against seven in two years is a sign of Government clutching at straws to try to excuse a system that is failing under their watch.
“The facts say that this is a problem that’s getting worse under the Liberals.”

Vanessa Goodwin’s statement reads in part:

The information released today also confirms that none of the six inmates released early over the past two years remain at large; that is, the inmates have returned to serve out the remainder of their sentence unless their sentence had already expired.

“The fact is that one prisoner was released two weeks early and will never return to serve that part of their sentence because of the failings of the system under stress,” Ms Giddings.

“Frankly, Tasmanians want to feel safe and know that prisoners are serving their full terms.

“They’re sick of spin on such an important issue.”
