TasWater last evening assures customers that despite discolouration of the water supply in some areas of Burnie, it remains safe to drink.
The discolouration is due to a build-up in mineral content and other solids within the reticulation system.
Contributing to the discolouration has been repair works carried on water mains over the last few weeks. When the water is turned back on after the repairs are complete, the increase in water velocity can dislodge sediment which normally remains dormant on the pipe walls.
TasWater has been flushing the water lines in an effort to clear the sediment.
In addition the recent flood event that damaged the Pet Dam Spillway required alteration to the raw water control. This change is having an overall effect on the storages and reticulation network until repairs, now underway, are complete.
Regular testing of the water has also been carried out which has shown it remains safe to drink and continues to meet Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
TasWater crews will continue scouring the pipes until all customers receive clear water.
TasWater appreciates the inconvenience experienced as result of the discolouration and assures customers everything is being done to rectify the problem.
We also undertake a rigorous daily and weekly water-testing regime to monitor the quality of drinking water supplied to homes and businesses throughout Tasmania.
