Thomas Pidd is returning to Tasmania in a production of May Gibbs ‘Snugglepot and Cuddlepie’.
Thomas hails from Ulverstone in the Northwest, later moving to Hobart to attend Elizabeth College.
Theatre and plays are part of Pidd family pedigree. Thomas follows his uncle and dad’s footsteps in performance both in acting and musical theatre. Thomas tells me the whole family thing may appear a bit ‘naff’ but nevertheless performance is part of the Pidd family legacy.
After working at theatre in Tassie, he was encouraged by other Tassie theatre pedigree, in his teacher at Elizabeth College, theatre director Chris Hamley and the similarly talented theatre director Robert Jarman to pursue and his acting ambitions. Thomas says although he has gone on to further his skills and experience on the mainland he believes the professionalism in Tasmanian theatre is equal to the best in the world. Thomas encouraged to extend his theatre talents in physical theatre and even had a special climbing contraption/mechanism built for him to work on during a production of Les Miserable in 2008.
In 2008 Thomas left Tassie to go to WA to extend his abilities in different disciplines but ones that might still inform his acting.
Thomas worked mining minerals in Western Australia and enjoyed conversations with fellow workers, some incredible people, such as one worker whose job entailed driving his truck around in circles. Thomas gained insight into a rich array of character studies forming fantastic fodder for a working actor.
You can see Thomas using his eclectic experience, including that in physical theatre to help bring to life the magical May Gibbs story of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie at the Theatre Royal on Mon 29 Aug 2016 5:30pm and Tue 30 Aug 2016 5:30pm.
