The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra has released its Annual Report for 2015 with the highlights of the year being a world first with Stephen Hough’s complete Beethoven piano concerto cycle and the RACT Symphony under the Stars in City Park, Launceston.
TSO Chair David Rich said in addition to the performance successes of the year, the TSO achieved a modest surplus of $115,000.
“There were many other magnificent performances, but it is worth citing two very successful collaborations in Risdon Prison,” Mr Rich said.
“These community-based activities at the prison are part of the cultural mission of Marko Letonja, our Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, who began a second threeyear contract with us in 2015.
“We enjoyed robust box office sales and ended the year with a string of sell-outs, but of course our modest financial surplus owes much to the funding we received from the Australian Government and the Tasmanian Government, including funding through the Tasmanian Icon program.
TSO Managing Director Nicholas Heyward said the TSO reached large and diverse audiences in 2015, often by collaborating with other arts organisations.

“Standouts include the premiere of the TSO commissioned The Wolf – a double bass concerto by Chinese-American composer Tan Dun – for the Tasmanian International Arts Festival,” Mr Heyward said.
“In addition the world premiere of Richard Mills’ Remembrance with Victorian Opera, Affinity with TasDance, and, with MONA, performances with Amanda Palmer, Antony Hegarty and Allison Bell.”
