Catherine Britt tells me she enjoys the beautiful scenery of Tasmania, which she has become familiar with over the years both on her own tours, and those with other artists.
Catherine thinks ‘MONA’ is ‘beautiful’ and visited the gallery with Tim Rodgers. Catherine acknowledges that she still doesn’t get to Tassie often enough. That acknowledgement will be addressed a little when Catherine visits Tasmania this week with Adam Harvey to present the latest production of ‘The Man in Black, The Johnny Cash Story, Reloaded’, a celebration of Johnny Cash and his music. Catherine and Adam will ‘respectfully’ tell the story of John and his collaborator in life and music, June Carter Cash.
Catherine says that the eight pages of dialogue that she must master for the production is not easy but with practice it becomes easier and its good avenue into acting which Catherine would love to do. Catherine is a renaissance woman, a girl who can write a song in five minutes and who has inherited the skills of radio presentation from her grandad, a radio host in Newcastle.
Following in her grandad’s footsteps Catherine hosted the Saturday Night Country show on the ABC and continuing the family radio tradition she was joined for a segment by her ‘punk’ psychologist dad.
Catherine admits to being incredibly stubborn, growing up the fourth child, ‘spoilt rotten’, and given ‘a tough time’ by four brothers who were simultaneously ‘protective and adored’ her. She says that that stubborn streak has served her well as she has navigated life’s rough spots.
Catherine admits that music isn’t necessarily a full time pursuit and has worked in a pizza shop and as a teacher’s aide. Catherine also believes it’s important to have another creative outlet. She has also dabbled in dancing, jazz ballet in Nashville which helped her learn an awareness of body and movement. Always good at writing and English at school Catherine, with her husband is embarking on the role of journalist as they launch a magazine. Radio is also on the agenda in the form of pod casts.
