RACT Insurance has issued a challenge to all Tasmanians this Easter break; zero fatalities on Tasmanian roads, zero drink driving infringements and zero speeding tickets.

RACT Insurance CEO Trent Sayers said every driver who uses the state’s roads should be doing everything they can to make the roads as safe as they can for all users.

“Tasmania Police have notified the public they will be out in force over the Easter break, there is really no excuse for why anyone should speed or get behind the wheel after drinking,” said Mr Sayers.

“Many Tasmanians will be planning trips around the state over the holiday period or catching up with friends and family.

“It should be the goal of every Tasmanian to make sure they, and the drivers around them arrive at their destination safely.”

RACT Insurance’s annual survey of Tasmanian drivers shows the under 30 age group are the most likely to speed with 21 per cent of 18-29 year old Tasmanians stating they regularly drive above the speed limit.

“What makes this statistic more concerning is 18-29 year olds are also the age group most likely to use their mobile phones while driving with 12 per cent stating they regularly check messages and/or emails while driving,” said Mr Sayers.

“According to the Road Safety Advisory Council, this age group is six times more likely to be involved in a serious road crash, resulting in serious injury or death, than the rest of the population.

“The problem is, at some point we have all had a moment of inattention and most of the time we get away with it.

“However, it’s not enough to have a ‘it won’t happen to me’ attitude, the only way to give yourself the best chance to be safe on the road is to give the road your full attention.”
