Marriage equality advocates have welcomed a push from Labor MP, Terri Butler, to have marriage equality debated but have called for cross-party support for similar legislation in the Senate as well.
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“I welcome Terri Butler’s attempt to have marriage equality debated because we are confident there is sufficient support among MPs to pass reform.”
“But I urge supporters across all parties to work together to also move legislation forward in the Senate, where the Government doesn’t control the agenda.”
“If marriage equality passes the Senate it will increase pressure on the Government to allow a free vote in parliament rather than go to a costly, unnecessary and divisive plebiscite.”
