Perhaps you may have heard, the Port Arthur Authority is planning some sort of a “celebration” of the Port Arthur Massacre, to be held I understand in late April.
I do know the chief invite has been extended to John Howard, who let’s face it probably deserves a guernsey for his work on gun control after the massacre.
The problem is, in an election year this will be turned into a political event, no-one can afford not to be seen at. That means Turnbull and Shorten will be there, along with all their support staff and hangers-on, plus journalists etc.
I do know the PA Authority are going to ask for a government grant to hold this event, and my understanding is the cheque will need to be a big one.
Imagine the cost of flying these eminent people, as little Johnnie likes to be called, all over Australia, then accommodating and feeding them?
Then there’s the cost of catering and hiring contractors to add to the list.
I just thought you might like to know all of this, because to my mind it feels like a complete waste of public money, when the local community surely wouldn’t want something so grandiose.
I have a close relative involved in the planning, and she’s already expressed her disgust at just what this is potentially going to pan into, and how much it is going to cost.
It’ll be taxpayer dollars going to, in effect, pump-up and preen some political egos, when all along the money could be much better used elsewhere. I wonder where the need came from and whether it’s being fed from the Feds or our local clowns ?
