Polling by The Australia Institute* showing strong support for more funding for regional ABC services in Tasmania should be a wake-up call for the state’s federal Liberal MPs and Senators, Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim says.
“It is not surprising that so many people support more funding when the ABC is such an integral part of the Tasmanian media landscape,” Senator McKim said.
“In a period when regional news outlets are facing serious commercial challenges, the ABC’s role has never been more important.”
“This has only been made worse by the Abbott-Turnbull cuts to the ABC, which have stifled rural and regional voices and made the organisation’s job more difficult.”
“As the most decentralised state in the Commonwealth, Tasmania has a greater need to hear from voices in our smaller cities and regional areas.”
*The Australia Institute poll shows 58% of Tasmanians support additional funding for the ABC to invest in more regional news services.
