Errol Stewart is always up for a challenge, and when asked whether his development site for the Silo Hotel could be used as the backdrop to promote the Launceston Cataract Challenge, he didn’t hesitate to abseil off the 20m structure.

This Monday, 22nd of February at 2:30pm, Errol Stewart along with Ian Ferrier, Director of Mountain Biking and Rock Climbing Tasmania, and other enthusiasts will be abseiling off the Silos.

The event also marks the official commencement of the building project with the development application recently approved by Launceston City Council.

The Launceston Cataract Challenge is a multi-sport event which promotes the benefits of active living in the community. The challenge will take place on Sunday, 20th March, 2016. The Cataract Gorge’s close proximity to the city makes it the perfect stage for the event. Its breathtaking natural beauty and challenging terrain provide a unique and exciting arena for competitors.

The event is designed to excite the community through physical activity. Its four different legs will engage a wider range of people than a traditional triathlon or multi-sport event. This year there will be Paddle, Run, Mountain Bike and Ropes.

The Ropes course is something that sets the Launceston Cataract Challenge apart from all other multisport events in the state. It is a legacy of our late founder, rock climbing legend Bob McMahon, who’s vision for the event always included this leg. For 2016 we will again use the elements above the Suspension Bridge which ensures a highly visible spectacle and will include two high level zip lines, a via ferratta roped climb along the river’s edge and finish with a short abseil back to the starting point near the suspension bridge.

Bob often looked at the Silos and commented that it would be a great site to conduct an abseil so it is fitting that we have been given this rare opportunity. We thank Errol Stewart for the chance to use this amazing site to launch this year’s event.
