Memories ... 4

It was the early 80’s and the Muffins – on a return to Brit – scored a freebie to the West End London for wondrous Cats …

More than three decades later the Muffins score another freebie … to the Derwent Entertainment Centre for the Aussie version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic musical based on poet T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.

And I have to say … again we were blown away …

The energy of these amazing dancing singers is so contagious. So contagious I felt 26 (well I’m only 43 …).

The first performance with star Elaine Paige as Grizabella the Glamour Cat, the late Sir John Mills as Gus the Theatre Cat ( http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/cats-performance/3578/ ) was at the New London Theatre, Drury Lane on May 11, 1981.

In the production’s first two years the cast included Wayne Sleep, Elaine Paige, Paul Nicholas. Brian Blessed, Graham Fletcher and Angela Richards.

The cast was a tad different to that for our West End visit. The energy wasn’t … but I don’t reckon it got anywhere near the immense energy of the Aussie production with Delta as the star turn.

The stage was also a tad better than the rusty memories of the West End set …

It was splendid evening. Thankyou guyzzzzzzzzz!x
