The Tasmania Report is a welcome update on the state’s economy and the start of a crucial conversation.

Labor Leader Bryan Green said it paints a clear picture of Tasmania’s strengths and also of the challenges we face.

“I commend the collaboration between Saul Eslake, the TCCI and TasCOSS. It was a very worthwhile exercise,” Mr Green said.

“This is the start of a positive community conversation so it was disappointing that no Government MPs attended this morning’s launch in Hobart.

“Labor on the other hand stands ready to engage on all of the topics raised by the Tasmania Report.

“The report endorses the strategic decisions Labor made in in government, backing Tasmania’s strengths and investing in sectors like agriculture and aquaculture.

“Labor’s record investment in irrigation is paying off with agriculture identified as driving the economy.

“But what does the Liberal Government see as the next key sector to invest in?

“Unlike Labor which has identified exciting opportunities in electric transport innovation and organic farming, the Liberals have failed to demonstrate vision.

“It also confirms the turnaround in Tasmania’s economy started in 2013, not when government changed hands as the Liberals would like to have Tasmanians believe.

“The report rightly identifies education as crucial to our future economic prosperity.

“The first policy Labor announced from opposition centred around taking education out of the political cycle.

“We need greater input from business and community groups to create a 20 year plan for education, not policy that changes when the government does.”
