Amnesty Tasmania Celebrates International Human Rights Day
This Thursday the 10th of December commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
To celebrate, Amnesty International Tasmania are holding an event to thank all of their supporters for their amazing work defending human rights in 2015, and inviting community members to join us in our Write 4 Rights campaign.
EVENT DETAILS:
When: 5:30pm, Thursday 10th December
Where: Upstairs at The New Sydney Hotel, 87 Bathurst St Hobart
RSVP: [email protected]
Every year, around Human Rights Day on December 10th, Amnesty’s Write 4 Rights campaign sees millions of people around the world write letters and send email messages to help prisoners of conscience and people at risk of human rights violations. Letter writing has always been at the core of Amnesty’s work, and 54 years of human rights activism show that letters really do have the power to change lives.
During this year’s Write 4 Rights, people in Hobart and around the world will write on behalf of people such as ‘Maria’ in Burkina Faso, who walked nearly 170km over three days to escape a forced marriage to a 70-year-old man who already had five wives.
They will also write on behalf of US man Albert Woodfox, who has spent over 40 years in solitary confinement after being convicted for the murder of a prison guard, although the evidence against him is questionable.
“We’ve seen huge growth in interest in human rights issues here in Tasmania in 2015” said Amnesty Tasmania community organiser Alex Kline. “Write 4 Rights is a chance to celebrate all we have achieved while taking action to help stop human rights abuses happening right now”.
