That’s right, we love our loos! Each year a dedicated team from the Bob Brown Foundation turn tons of human waste from The Falls Arts and Music Festival into sweet sweet compost. Not to be jeered at, the water free, eco-friendly, composting toilets at Falls save 91 kilolitres of fresh drinking water over the duration of the festival. The infamous (if you’ve evern been to the festival) Loo Crew convert human waste into a caravan sized pile of compost at the stunning Marion Bay site in Southern Tasmania each year – and don’t use any nasty chemicals in a totally green (resisting a pun here) process start to finish.
Set to the beautiful backdrop of Marion Bay, The Falls Festival has been recognised internationally for its dedication to environmental and sustainable initiatives. This year The Bob Brown Foundation are proud to be part of this ongoing tradition managing the eco-friendly composting loo’s.
“It’s a great team to be part of” said Sarah Van Est, heading back to be part of the Loo Crew for her 4th year running, “It’s amazing to work for the Bob Brown Foundation, the legacy of a man who has achieved so much for the Tassie environment and community”.
“It’s great to come back each year and see the waste turned into compost and know your hard work form the year before has made such a big difference to the local environment,” Sarah said. “This year we’re excited to be planting a lavender garden in the main area, so over the coming years we can show even more love to our loo’s and mix lavender into the sawdust.”
It take a team of about 80 to get the job done each year, paid ‘down stairs’ staff who get the dirty work done and a team of 70 volunteers from around Tasmania and the globe who do the not so dirty work.
The Bob Brown Foundation are currently seeking volunteers to help them manage the eco-friendly composting toilets. “Just like our Loo’s, our volunteers get loads of love,” Sarah told us, oh as well as a ticket to the festival, premium camp site, delicious free meals prepared especially just for loo crew, Falls merchandise and an invite to the illustrious Falls Staff After Party! It also a great chance to get involved with a feisty environmental group and help make a difference.
