Meetings to progress mediation efforts between Northern Midlands Council and the owners of Launceston Airport over a rates dispute have taken a step in the right direction.
Federal Member for Lyons Eric Hutchinson said his sole reason for facilitating meetings in Canberra today was to support Northern Midlands Council ratepayers.
“Given what was developing as a stalemate situation, there was a clear need to arrange for Northern Midlands Council representatives to meet with federal decision makers,” he said.
“I hope the Council will be encouraged with the outcomes of the meetings I facilitated today with the Federal Minister for Local Government, Paul Fletcher, chiefs of staff to the Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Tasmanian Senator Richard Colbeck.”
“As I have said before, resolution will come when the two parties agree on a way forward.
“The department has suggested such a solution by offering both parties a pathway to resolve this impasse and I hope that Council and the airport owners can come to a satisfactory agreement for the sake of the local community.”
