Federal Member for Lyons Eric Hutchinson has expressed frustration at the Senate today voting down proposed changes to coastal shipping laws.
“Tasmania’s Labor and Green Senators along with Senator Jacqui Lambie have denied Tasmania significant opportunities,” Mr Hutchinson said.
“This condemns the coastal shipping fleet around Australia to further contraction, with increasing loss of jobs in the maritime sector.
“It has put at risk countless more jobs onshore in businesses all around the country, but particularly in the island state in the island nation.
“It has also put at risk the $30 million investment by DP World at the Burnie port which would have meant jobs both onshore and offshore as well as the construction and investment opportunities
“It astounds me that Senators who purportedly represent Tasmanians could stand by and watch businesses struggle under the high cost of Bass Strait and coastal shipping generally.”
