A Labor Government would invest $450,000 to establish a Maritime Heritage Centre at Franklin, a key step towards realising the community’s vision for a working maritime precinct.
Labor Leader Bryan Green said the project would showcase Tasmania’s special timber industry and tell the story of the region’s boat building history.
“Labor is committed to supporting our regional towns by creating new employment opportunities and diversifying local economies,” Mr Green said.
“Today’s announcement builds on Labor’s commitment to grow the special timbers industry by guaranteeing resource security.
“We see this project as a great way to support our special timbers sector at the same time as creating a regional tourism experience.
“Labor understands that tourism in Southern Tasmania is becoming increasingly focused on cultural and recreational experiences and we are determined to support that transition.
“Particularly, in regional areas like the Huon Valley we have an under-supply of cultural and recreational attractions that tourism markets demand.
“The Hodgman Government will this year receive more than $400 million in additional revenue and Labor believes more can be done to stimulate our regional economies.
“Labor wants to support the local industry, enhance tourism infrastructure and create a rewarding visitor experience.
“A working maritime heritage precinct in Franklin would offer visitors a unique interactive experience.
“The Maritime Heritage Centre would act as a front of house facility for interpretation tours including the Wooden Boat Centre and the Cartela restoration project.”
