There is a song on Garrett Kato’s new album ‘That Low and Lonesome Sound’ called ‘UFO’, ‘the story of a chance meeting of a human with an extra-terrestrial fits nicely into our discussion as Canadian born, and now Byron Bay based musician Garrett Kato explains, the experience of relocating to Australia has been something akin to like the extra-terrestrial entering a new world, a substantial ‘adjustment’.

Garrett did however, know that relocating was the ‘right thing to do’ as he sets up home with his partner and 1 year old youngster in a country he loves. He sees Australia as having a similar culture to Canada but also sees it as totally’ unique’!

Garrett is familiar with Tassie having his partner’s sister living here and of course he has explored MONA which he calls ‘weird’ but ‘wonderful’ and Tasmania itself ‘cute’ and ‘honestly’ his ‘favourite place in Australia’.

Garrett says whatever you do in life you should have a passion for it, that it is a ‘necessity’ to follow your passion. Garrett doesn’t wear a suit on stage so working in a retail clothing shop is most certainly not ‘suit-able’ as a career choice but for a while Garrett was working in such a shop and was offered to become a partner in his own retail business but he declined. It is in music that Garrett finds his creative outlet and so he was delighted to take up another offer, that from his friend Pete Murray, to accompany him on his national tour which will see Garrett perform in Tasmania this weekend.

With the name Garrett meaning ‘strength’ and the name ‘Kato’ from the Latin meaning ‘all knowing’, we know that Garrett will maintain a strong passion for music.
