The Hodgman Liberal Government is a strong supporter of arts and cultural organisations in Tasmania and we recognise the important role that our community museums play as custodians of our state’s unique cultural heritage.

Recipients of the 2016 Arts Tasmania’s Small Museums and Collections grants program have been announced today.

The Small Museums and Collections program provides financial support to the sector as well as the opportunity for staff and volunteers to work with professional Roving Curators to develop their skills and support their curatorial and collection management practices.

A total of 14 collections will receive investment funding of $38,500 and 120 days of Roving Curator time towards the important task of preserving Tasmania’s unique movable cultural heritage.

The funding also includes an allocation to continue the Making Museums Work workshop program that is offered to staff and volunteers of small museums and collections across the state. In 2016 there will be a particular focus on disaster preparedness.

Organisations receiving investment through the Small Museums and Collections program include:

• The Friends of Melaleuca, Wildcare Inc: a grant of $9,217 and 8 days of Roving Curator assistance for the development of an interpretation plan and interpretation materials for the Deny King Heritage Museum.
• Avoca Museum and Information Centre: a grant of $2,788 towards the purchase of preservation materials and production of interpretation material for their exhibition The Sporting History of Avoca, as well as 5 days of Roving Curator assistance.
• Wynyard RSL: a grant of $746 towards the purchase of preservation materials and 8 days of Roving Curator assistance for the collection management of the Wynyard RSL Museum.
