I am pleased to announce that Reverend Professor Michael Tate AO, the State’s first Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, has been reappointed to the position.

The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner advises the Integrity Commission and Members of Parliament on ethical issues. The position is an independent statutory office established by the Integrity Commission Act 2009.

Father Tate lectured in law at the University of Tasmania from 1972-78 prior to his election to the Senate. He served as a Senator for 15 years, including holding the position of Minister for Justice from 1987-93. He was Ambassador to the Netherlands and the Holy See from 1993-96. In 1996 he received an Order of Australia.

He is held in high regard by Members of Parliament and it is pleasing that he has accepted the offer to continue in the role when his first five year term expires later this month.
