The Liberal Government is setting Forestry Tasmania up for extinction by selling off its most profitable arm and starving it of its community obligations.

Labor Leader Bryan Green said Forestry Tasmania’s annual report reveals the business has dramatically cut back spending on road maintenance and is relying heavily on its plantation assets that are slated for sale.

“Forestry Tasmania has been put on a path to fail,” Mr Green said.

“The improved financial position has been brought about by sacking workers and cutting back on community obligations like road maintenance.

“They’ve spent $40 million less on roads than the previous year at a time when Tasmanian communities are calling for upgrades.

“A $40 million reduction in spending at a time when the Government is bragging about providing $1 million in compensation to road contractors.

“Meanwhile, the one part of the business going well, its plantation assets, is being prepared for a mass sell-off.

“The way this Government is managing FT is idiotic and will doom the organisation to failure.”
