The latest CommSec State of the States Report is a reminder that the Government needs to do more than just pat itself on the back.

Shadow Treasurer Scott Bacon said while the employment situation is undoubtedly improving, Tasmania is still a long last in terms of economic growth.

“The Government has been a bit too quick to take credit for an economic recovery,” Mr Bacon said.

“The State of the States report is a reminder that compared to other parts of Australia, Tasmania’s economy is very sluggish.

“In terms of growth we are last of the states by a long margin.

“Population growth is also a big concern, and while the Government has a long-term target, it’s doing nothing to address the situation in the short-term.

“On the positive side of the equation, we’ve seen a sharp improvement in the number of dwelling commencements.

“These figures vindicate the previous government’s decision to invest in a first home builders boost scheme.

“Stronger employment figures are also welcome and are the result of strategic investment in areas like agriculture, aquaculture and tourism.

“What we need now from the Liberals are positive, constructive ideas rather than self-congratulation.”
