To celebrate the recent limited release 7” vinyl Superstition or Love/My Heart is Your Home, EWAH will launch the video for Superstition is Love at a very special screening/listening session at the home of Hobart indie music and vinyl, Tommy Gun Records.
Superstition or Love is a song about constraints and freedom, real and imagined and ideas of habit and faith – and of course love.
The video is set in a religious hall overlooking the river Derwent, and plays with time, space, light, containment and release in reference to the thematics of the Side A single.
The video for Superstition or Love, was made in collaboration with local filmmakers Raef Sawford and Mark Kuilenburg. Another local artist, Natalie Holtsbaum injected creativity with a transformative golden make up sequence.
Raef Sawford is an independent artist and filmmaker whose art practice examines the experience of time, particularly in relation to the moving image, which he explores by developing open-ended artworks that are not reliant on resolution or closure, but instead offer potential for the viewer to experience the here-and-now. He was Creative Director of the ATOM award winning Roar Film for many years and has worked on public art and film projects both here and internationally.
The cinematographer for the project was Mark Kuilenburg, a Hobart based DP, editor and animator and one half of design and film studio Mark & Tom.
Natalie Holtsbaum is an RMIT graduate with a BA in Gold and Silversmithing and creates sensuous pieces, including something of a signature piece, The Honey Spoon, which earned her the 2012 RMIT Alumni Award. She also curates for the Mona Markets (MoMA) and has worked on numerous performance design projects. Her experience with gold was key to the make up sequence.
The vinyl:
EWAH’s latest release represents a departure from previous shambling DIY and tech-reticent tendencies to explore a more polished electronica art pop sound. Don’t worry if you don’t have a turntable – you get to covet a beautiful electric blue high quality pressing, and receive a complimentary digital download with each record.
A brief history:
Highlights of EWAH’s music career include supports with Rowland S Howard, Harry Howard and the NDE, The Bird Blobs, French/Tucsan, Arizonian artist Marianne Dissard and Oliver Mann. The latter, a truly original operatic folk songwriter and performer, invited EWAH to join him on the gothic and delicate duet, Deepest Temple Part II.
In 2010 EWAH took home the APRA Darebin Songwriters’ Award after performing her a capella song When You’re Down & Out.
Reviews of EWAH’s previous releases:

“E-wah Lady makes stuff go, with her excellent command of tunes and what sounds like quite a mature and realistic view of life.” David Nichols
“There’s no pretense, and the power of each performance offers a truth that is seldom seen these days.” The Dwarf
