I’ll never forget the iconic photo of Stephen Harper standing on a melting ice floe in the Arctic during a visit to promote oil drilling prospects opened up by melting of the Arctic ice: what better illustration can there being of the power of denial to turn humans into blind fools? The last month and a half has felt like the ending of a very dark phase of political history when it seemed that ignorance and stupidity were proving to be dominant in human affairs, and the dawn of renewed hope that maybe enough humans are not so stupid after all, that we might actually have something to hope for!
