A new film revealing unseen footage of coal mining, corruption and community resistance against one of Australia’s most controversial mining projects will have its Tasmanian premier on November 4th at 6:30pm at Village Cinemas in Hobart.

Black Hole tells the story of the extraordinary resistance movement that emerged in response to the Maules Creek mine in the Leard State Forest over the last two years.

It tracks the colourful and passionate characters who took part in a protest camp which ran for 960 days and saw over 320 arrests, as well as the mining company personnel, police and politicians who were determined to push the project through.

Coming as momentum builds for the People’s Climate Rally in Hobart on November 29, Black Hole is an intense and riveting exposé that asks us to examine the future of coal, corporate responsibility, and the different rights afforded to individuals as opposed to big polluters.

It brings to life the power imbalance between big corporations and communities as the mining industry’s ever-increasing thirst for fossil fuels which meets the unwavering spirit of the Maules Creek coal mine blockaders as they endure police misconduct, corporate spies and the destruction of sacred Indigenous burial sites.

“This is far more than just a campaign to stop a coal mine, this is ground zero for empowerment of citizens who have become disenchanted with a system that is portrayed as a democracy.” says João Dujon Pereira, the film’s Producer and Director.
