• Andrew Wilkie: Parliament must intervene today on Syria crisis The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, will seek to move a motion in Question Time today calling on the Federal Government to give safe refuge to 30,000 Syrians, and also to permanently double Australia’s refugee humanitarian intake. Mr Wilkie will make the case that Australia must act in this way because of the enormous tragedy unfolding in Syria and neighbouring countries. He will also note Australia’s role in contributing to the current instability in the region as well as then Opposition Leader Tony Abbott’s commitment during negotiations after the 2010 federal election to double the humanitarian intake.
