Melbourne is home for recording hip hop artist NYUON and it is Melbourne he sings about in his new single ‘Your city’.
Born in Ethiopia to Sudanese parents NYUON can’t remember much about his life in his birthplace, having left at a very young age, so Melbourne really is home and in ‘Your City’ he becomes Melbourne city’s voice and takes on its persona.
NYUON hasn’t been to Tasmania yet but with a student friend in Tassie who he would like to visit, he says he is looking forward to bringing ‘Your City’ to Tasmania’s cities!
Music has always been part of NYUON’s life from very early on when he found learning lyrics came very easily to him and he would often pause his music player to enable him to learn and sing along with the songs. Even though NYUON tells me his parents were ‘typical Sudanese parents’, encouraging him into a career of law or medicine, NYUON decided to pursue music as ‘there will be time for school later on’. Giving a boost to his music career was his second placing in the Melbourne Music Bank competition.
NYUON’s video clip (shot by filmmaker George Kalpa) to ‘Your city’ takes us into a Melbourne by night, in some respects an industrial wasteland but NYUON’s hip hops lyrics juxtapose the fertility of the words with the barren nightscape, giving vision of life in the darkness of the night. NYUON also insisted a basketball court be featured in the clip! The clip is peopled by NYUON’s own friends who have supported him all through his musical journey.
NYUON will launch ‘Your city’ at The Workers Club Melbourne on March 13.
