Paul Harriss can’t possibly celebrate the passing of his transformed protest legislation with a straight face.

Deputy Labor Leader Michelle O’Byrne says the whole saga has been an embarrassment for the Liberal Government.

“We’ve seen backdown after backdown since the Liberals introduced the shabby bill and rammed it through the lower house,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“Then we saw the Legislative Council do the Government’s work for it, amending the legislation so it’s barely recognisable.

“It’s worth pointing out that to save face, the Liberals introduced their own amendments to remove mandatory penalties.

“It was the icing on the cake of an embarrassing chapter for the Government.

“Labor strongly supports the rights of Tasmanians to be safe at work.

“But the Liberals original legislation went way beyond that and now it’s a confusing mess.

“Labor will try and make sense of it before it comes back to the lower house.”
