Shadow Energy Minister David Llewellyn says the end of Hydro’s TasWind project on King Island is very disappointing.

“This is a real blow for King Island’s economy and Tasmania’s renewable energy future,” Mr Llewellyn said.

“We’re talking about a two billion dollar project which would have put King Island at the forefront of the renewable energy sector.”

Mr Llewellyn said the decision not to proceed with the TasWind project further reinforced the need for the Commonwealth to retain the current Renewable Energy Target.

“Uncertainty over the RET may not have been the deciding factor in relation to TasWind, but it will certainly be weighing heavy in the minds of other renewable energy investors.

“The collapse of a two billion dollar investment opportunity highlights the need for more renewable energy incentives, not fewer.

“The lack of commitment from the Liberals on the RET is hurting our economy and putting jobs and investment at risk.

“Matthew Groom needs to explain what a cut to the RET would do to the viability of other projects in Tasmania.”
